1. Historical Evolution

Nankai University began teaching and research Marxism theory in 1952, then, the recruitment of postgraduate students to the related majors started in 1983. From 1997, Nankai University’s School of Marxism Education is composed by three departments: Marxism-Leninism Basic Theory, Moral Education Teaching and Researching Station, and Ideological and Political Education (subordinated to Political Science). This way, the Institute became one of the earliest institutes specialized in teaching and research Marxism theory. 

In 2000, the Institute started the enrollment of undergraduate students for the major Ideological and Political Education; from 2003 it is entitled to confer Doctorate in Marxism Theory and Ideological and Political Education; from 2005 it is entitled to confer Doctorate in History of the Communist Party of China, and in Scientific Socialism and International Communist Movements; in 2006 the Institute conferred the first Doctorate in Marxism Theory (First Level); in 2012, Marxism Theory (First Level) was nominated Tianjin’s key discipline. In addition, the college has Marxism Theory Postdoctoral Research Station, Ministry of Education College Counselor Training and Training Base Program, Tianjin’s Colleges Key Research Base and so on.

In 1993, Nankai University was identified by the former State Education Commission as a “Two Courses” National University teaching reform pilot unit, and a curriculum system called “Nankai mode” was created. After the establishment of Marxism Theory (First Level), Nankai University paid more attention to the close integration between disciplinary construction and the teaching of ideological and political theories, exploring effective ways to promote the teaching of these subjects, and improving their effectiveness. Ten Professors of the Institute of Marxism Educational Theory attended the Central Marxism Theoretical Research and Construction Project, and they wrote the teaching materials for 3 of the 4 classes of University Students' Ideological and Political Theory New Curriculum.

In 2009 and 2010, “Basic Principles of Marxism Theory” and “Outline of Modern Chinese History” were successively nominated National Superior Course; in 2013, they were nominated National Resource Sharing Programs. In 2010, the doctoral courses “Chinese Marxism Theory and Contemporary Era” and “Classics Selected Readings about Marxism Theory” were listed by the Ministry of Education as one of the Pilot Programs for Postgraduate Students Ideological and Political Education Reform.

2. Current Situation

Academic majors: for undergraduate students the Institute offers the major Marxism Theory (First Level), subordinated to Ideological and Political Education. For postgraduate students, the Institute offers nine majors: Basic Principles of Marxism Theory, Marxism Theory’s Phylogeny, Research on Chinese Marxism, Research on Marxism Abroad, Ideological and Political Education, Basic Studies on China's Modern Issues (First Level), Scientific Socialism and International Communist Movements, History of the Communist Party of China, and Military Thought. For PhD students, the Institute offers 8 majors: Basic Principles of Marxism Theory, Marxism Theory’s Phylogeny, Research on Chinese Marxism, Research on Marxism Abroad, Ideological and Political Education, Basic Studies on China's Modern Issues (Second Level), Scientific Socialism and the International Communist Movements (subordinated to Political Science), and History of the Communist Party of China.

Professors: in total, in the Institute work 59 full-time professors: 24 professors, 22 associate professors and 13 lecturers; 48 of the teachers have a doctorate. One of the professors was selected by the Ministry of Education for “Trans-Century Training Program for Talents of Humanities and Social Science” and was awarded “Teaching and Research Award Program for Outstanding Young Teacher”; another professor was selected by the Ministry of Education for “Program for New Century Excellent Talents”, and 10 professors were selected for Tianjin’s personnel training plan “131 Project”.
