1. Historical Evolution

Biology was one of the earliest disciplines established when Nankai University was founded in 1919. The Department of Biology was created in 1922 and the first dean was Professor Ying Shangde, who graduated from Columbia University. Based on the foundations of the Department, the College of Life Sciences was established in June 1993, thus beginning a new chapter in its development. During development over more than 90 years, generation after generation of biologists in Nankai have followed the university motto of “Dedication to public interests, acquisition of all-round capability and aspiration for progress with each passing day” to move forward, pioneer and innovate. They have worked hard, trained batch after batch of excellent talent for the economic construction and scientific progress of our country, and made important contributions to the development of the life sciences.

2. Current Situation

It is presently composed of the Department of Microbiology, the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, the Department of Genetics and Cell Biology, the Department of Plant Biology, and the Department of Zoology and Developmental Biology. It also includes the Institute of Molecular Biology, the Institute of Entomology, TEDA Functional Genomics Research Center and the Teaching Experimental Center.

The College has 170 staff members, including one CAS academician, 11 Yangtze River Scholars, 9 recipients of the NSFC National Outstanding Young Scientist Award, 66 professors and 33associate-professors, this is a strong academic team. There are 1,265 students in the College at present, including 493 undergraduates, 441 masters degree studentsand 331 doctoral students. Our graduates are welcomed because of their solid foundation of knowledge, strong experimental skills and work hard assiduously for the professionalism.

The College is entitled to confer Ph.D degrees in biology and possesses a postdoctoral research center in biology. It currently recruits doctoral students and masters degree students in 6 sub-disciplines. Microbiology and Zoology are national key disciplines, while Botany has also been identified as a national key construction discipline. Microbiology, Zoology, Crop Breeding and Cell Biology are all Tianjin key disciplines.

Over the past five years, the College has undertaken more than 556 projects funded by various sources, with total funds amounting to 290 million RMB. More than 800 SCI papers have been published in journals including Nature and PNAS, along with 20 monographs. About 70 patents for inventions have been obtained.
