In 1981, Nankai University took the lead in launching tourism major among higher education institutes in China. In 2010, College of Tourism and Service Management, Nankai University was officially founded.
Through thirty years, the major of tourism, Nankai University is still pursuing the leading role in tourism education, the high land of China tourism education and research and the think tank offering services for national strategies.CTSM defines five professional directions including tourism marketing, tourism enterprises, tourism ecology, tourism information, and service and leisure. It launched two undergraduate education-- tourism management, exhibition economy and event management, education of MSc, MTA and PhD. It commenced an international hospitality education program with American Hotel & Lodging Educational Institute and Marriot International, Inc. Every year nearly thousand of leaders from tourism authorities and enterprises receive training in here. As a unit of secretariat of MTA, the college offers training for hundreds of young teachers for domestic tourism colleges.
The college established Research Center of Tourism Market and Destination Marketing, China–U.S. Tourism Research Center with University of South Carolina, Collaborative Innovation Center for Tourism Planning with Architectural Planning and Design Research Institute of Tianjin University, China Tourism Human Resources and Vocational Development Center supported by China National Tourism Administration, China Marine Tourism Center with State Oceanic Administration, Leisure Agriculture and Rural Tourism Center together with Tianjin Municipal Committee of Agriculture. The establishment of these advanced research centers provides a broad space for the development of the teachers.
In accordance with the strategic needs of national industry development, College of Tourism and Service Management takes on the mission of think tank with the indomitable spirit. The representative researches conducted within recent years include: Research on China's National Tourism Strategy Planning Framework, New Strategy of China Inbound Tourism Market : impact of haze, terror, foreign exchange rate, visa, outbound tourism , Research on International Experience of Tourism and Social Poverty Alleviation, Study on Management System of National Parks with Chinese Characteristics, Study on International Experience and Chinese Practice of Integration of Tourism Industry, Research on Development Strategy of Modern Service Industry in China and etc.
The school has 32 professional teachers who were graduated from different universities, including several young teachers from Peking University, Nankai University, Sun Yat-Sen University, The University of Nottingham and University of Kassel etc. Associate professor Lixiang, graduated from University of South Carolina, was recruited from the “The Recruitment Program of Global Experts” in Tianjing, he is in charge of the construction of research center of China-US tourism, guides the young teachers and doctoral students to carry out research on international cooperation. Among the full-time teachers, 61.3% of them hold the job title of associate professor or above, 61.3% obtained the doctorate and over 58% full-time teachers have held the post of teacher for over ten years. Professors such as Li Tianyuan, Bai Changhong and Xu Hong are enjoying a high reputation in the academic world in China as the pace-setter in scientific research. Associate professor Chen Ye, Qiu Wei and Yi Zhibin already joined the training plan on of the National Tourism Administration, so as to cultivate the youth into the pace-setter in scientific research.
The college advocates the combination of classroom teaching and learning practice, as well as international exchange. Courses such as “Introduction to Tourism” and “Economics of Tourism” of undergraduate study, “Service Management” and “Tourism Investment & Financial Management” during the Master’s school year were rated as quality courses on the school level. University-industry cooperation with over thirty famous enterprises in the domestic tourism industry, such as HNA, CITIC, Qunar and Baidu etc, the purpose is to help students to attend practical teaching and research on teachers. It signed cooperative agreement with more than ten world famous colleges of tourism in Asia, Europe and America, so as to offer more opportunities for teachers and students for international exchange. Besides, the tourism market laboratory of the school was honored as the demonstration centre for TianJin City experiment teaching. Currently, the school is uniting with other colleges and institute of the industry to construct cloud experimental center together, and actively applying for national title of National Demonstration Centre.
