TEDA College is a comprehensive college jointly established by Nankai University and Tianjin Economic-Technological Development Area (TEDA). The College is located in TEDA, Binhai New Area of Tianjin. TEDA Campus serves as one of the three campuses of Nankai University. The academic activities of TEDA College are pursued in 2 Institutes，TEDA Institute of Biological Sciences and Biotechnology and TEDA Applied Physics Institute.
TEDA Institute of Biological Sciences and Biotechnology
TEDA Institute of Biological Sciences and Biotechnology (formerly known as TEDA School of Biological Sciences and Biotechnology) was established in 2003. The Institute is under the leadership of Prof. Lei Wang, Assistant President of Nankai University, who is a Cheung Kong Scholar and Recipient of Chinese National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars.
The Institute has established “Key Laboratory of Microbial Functional Genomics of Tianjin Municipal Government” and “Research Center for Functional Genomics and Biochip of Tianjin Municipal Government” supported by National Key Discipline of Microbiology of Nankai University. In 2006, the Institute was authorized by the Ministry of Education to form “Engineering and Research Center for Microbial Functional Genomics and Detection Technology” and “Key Laboratory of Molecular Microbiology and Technology”. In 2010, team of “Microbial Genomics Research and Molecular Evolution” led by Prof. Lei Wang was listed in the “Cheung Kong Scholars and Innovative Research Team” of Ministry of Education. An innovative team with international level has been formed, headed by Cheung Kong Scholars and Recipient of Chinese National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars.
The main research areas of the institute include microbial functional genomics and evolution, molecular virology and immunity, applied microbiology and biotechnology (environmental microorganism, pathogenic fungus, petroleum microorganism and biocontrol microorganism), microbial key component synthesis. At present, research in several areas have reach internationally advanced level, including the evolutionary law and pathogenic mechanism of significant pathogens, molecular basis and evolution law of environmental microorganism and industrial microorganism, genetic mechanism of biodiversity. Since its establishment, the Institute has undertaken projects of the "Eleventh Five-Year" and Twelfth Five-Year” National Major Research Program, National 863 Program, 973 Program, and Program of National Natural Science Foundation of China. In recent years, the Institute has published high level papers in international authoritative journals, like Nature, PNAS, Genome Biology, FEMS Microbiology Reviews, etc., and has been granted many international and domestic invention patents. The Institute has won good reputation from both domestic and international experts.
The Institute has built genomics, proteomics and bioinformatics platforms with international first-class level, supported by the national "985" project, "211" project and Tianjin Economic Development Area. The Institute houses a suite of advanced equipment, such as the new third generation of PacBio sequencing system, the second generation Illumina/ Solexagenome analyzer, genome optical mapping system and ABI Ion Torrent sequencing system, MALDI-TOF-TOF (MS, ABI 4700 proteomics analyzer), trace Diane two-dimensional liquid chromatography system, dawn EP480, EP850 server, SUN V880, V890 server and so on.
TEDA Applied Physics Institute
TEDA Applied Physics Institute (formerly known as TEDA Applied Physics School) is co-established by TEDA College and College of Physics of Nankai University in 2003, one of the top-ten universities of China.
The mission of TEDA-API is to become an internationally distinguished Center of Excellence in Applied Physics. We want to serve as an education and training basis for fundamental physics and as a center for technologically oriented research thus providing the human resources demanded by the high-tech industry of the Tianjin Economic-technology Development Area. The objective of TEDA-API is to play an exemplary role for the cooperation between academic institutions and industry. Our particular task is to contribute to solutions for the development of key technologies of the nearby high-tech industry.
TEDA-API started up from the Laboratory of Holographic Storage and Technique and Research Center for Optoelectronics. The founder and first Dean of API (APS), Prof. Jingjun Xu, has built up API from scratch to the powerful and excellently equipped research institution it is today. Under his deanship the Tianjin Government Key Laboratory for Photonics Materials and Information Science Technology (TGKL-PMIST) has been founded in 2004 and the Key Laboratory of the Ministry of Education for Low-Intensity Nonlinear Photonics in 2006. As part of the academic quality management the Materials Physics and Chemistry Division of APS (API) were evaluated and passed as Tianjin Key Disciplines in 2006 and its Optics Division as National Key Discipline in 2007. As part of its internationalization strategy, Prof. Dr. Romano Rupp from Vienna University was selected as the Dean of API. He has been in office at API (APS) since summer 2007.
At present the main research fields of TEDA-API are in physics of nonlinear materials, low-intensity nonlinear optics, microscopic quantum coherent optics, advanced fabrication techniques for photonic materials, spectroscopy, sensor techniques, quantum materials and devices, and nano-photonics.
More than 7000 square meters were allocated by TEDA College for laboratories, offices, and seminar rooms and more than 40 million RMB have been invested in research equipment to promote the rise of TEDA-API to an academic institution of international reputation. At present there are 22 staff members, among them 10 full professors, 3 associated professors, and 2 senior engineers from European Union, South Korea, and United States of America respectively. Two of its teachers are Cheung Kong Scholar (Jingjun Xu and Zhigang Chen), three were awarded by the National Natural Science Fund as Outstanding Young Scholars (Jingjun Xu, Jianguo Tian, and Zhigang Chen), three were granted the distinguished support of the Trans-Century Training Programme Foundation for Talents by the Ministry of Education of China (Jingjun Xu, Jianguo Tian, and Yongfa Kong),and four received the honorable support of the Program for New Century Excellent Talents in University. Lectures, seminars, instruction, and guiding into up-to-date research work can be offered in English. Regulations and infrastructure were adapted to facilitate access of postdocs and PhD students from all over the world.
