December 2007, the Vice Rector of University of Glasgow Prof. Andrea Nolan guided a delegation to visit Nankai University. The Vice President of Nankai University Guan Naijia met the guests at the Foreign Guesthouse. The staff of Office for International Academic Exchanges, College of Law, Zhou Enlai School of Government, Business School, and School of Medicine also took part in the meeting with Prof. Nolan to seek for possibilities of exchanges and cooperation.

March 2011, the“Glasgow Day” was held at Nankai University. Master Fan Zeng, a Tenured Professor at Nankai University, was awarded the Honorary Doctorate by University of Glasgow. During the ceremony, the two Universities signed a Students Exchanges Agreement. 

July 2011, the two universities signed the agreement, by which the Nankai University–University of Glasgow Confucius Institute was officially launched. In October of the same year, the inauguration ceremony of the Confucius Institute at the University of Glasgow was held in Glasgow. During the event, the “Nankai Day” and Master Fan Zeng’s Lecture and Exhibition were held. The two universities also signed a 1+1 Agreement and a 2+1 Agreement of Joint Degree Programs.

May 2012, Vice Rector of University of Glasgow Prof. Andrea Nolan visited Nankai University. Vice President of Nankai University Professor Tong Jiadong met the guests in the Administration Building. The staff of Graduate School and Office for International Academic Exchanges took part in the meeting. Both sides discussed the establishment of the Joint Graduate School and the 3+2 Ph.D. Project. On the day of the visit, Vice President Guan Naijia also met with University of Glasgow’s delegation. She thanked Professor Nolan who firmly supported the collaboration between the two universities and hoped that the cooperation between the two universities would continue to deepen and exploring even more new ways of cooperation.

June 2012, invited by the Rector of Glasgow University Anton Muscatelli, Chancellor Xue Jinwen guided a Nankai delegation to visit the University of Glasgow. Rector Muscatelli, Vice Rector Nolan and others warmly welcomed Chancellor Xue Jinwen. Both sides are seeing the Confucius Institute at the University of Glasgow as a platform for comprehensive cooperation between the universities. Vice President Zhu Guanlei took part in the meeting. Chancellor Xue and Rector Muscatelli discussed various modes of cooperation between the two universities. The two sides also signed the Memorandum of Cooperation in Urban Management Major.

December 2012, Rector of University of Glasgow Anton Muscatelli visited Nankai University. Xue Jinwen met the guest at the Administration Building. Vice President Tong Jiadong, the staff of Graduate School, Office for International Academic Exchanges, College of Foreign Languages, Zhou Enlai School of Government, and College of Environmental Science and Engineering also took part in the meeting. Both sides discussed the arrangement of the Joint Graduate School, the Ph.D. program that will be set up in the future and agreed on three areas of cooperation: international relations, English translation, environment/carbon management.

January 2013, Vice President Tong Jiadong guided a delegation to visit the University of Glasgow, he received a warm welcome from the Rector of University of Glasgow Anton Muscatelli, the Vice Rector Nolan, the Vice Rector Anderson and the staff of the International Affairs Office, College of Social Studies, College of Engineering, and College of Arts. The main topics discussed were the arrangement of the Joint Graduate School, the Ph.D. programs, the academic cooperation and the educational exchanges. Assistant to the President and Director of TEDA College Professor Wang Lei, and the staff of Graduate School, Office for International Academic Exchange, Zhou Enlai School of Government, College of Foreign Languages, and College of Environmental Science and Engineering took part in the meeting.

December 2013, the representatives of Nankai University and University of Glasgow discussed over problems in the construction of the Joint Graduate School. Tong Jiadong, Vice President and Dean of Graduate School, attended the meeting. He was accompanied by the staff of Graduate School, Office for International Academic Exchanges, Zhou Enlai School of Government, School of Economics, College of Environmental Science and Engineering, and College of Economy and Social Development.

March 2014, Anton Muscatelli, the famous English economist and Rector of the University of Glasgow, received from Nankai University’s President Gong Ke a Nankai University’s school badge. This symbolizes that Prof. Anton Muscatelli is officially a Nankai’s Guest Professor. The two badges on the chest also indicate the continued international cooperation between Nankai University and the University of Glasgow. 

March 2014, invited by the Rector of University of Glasgow Anton Muscatelli, Chancellor Xue Jinwen guided a delegation to visit University of Glasgow. Vice President Zhu Guanglei and the people in charge of Graduate School, Office for International Academic Exchanges, School of Economics, and Business School also attended the meeting. Chancellor Xue and Rector Muscatelli discussed the cooperation in the construction of the Joint Graduate School. Both sides reviewed a series of early preparatory works for the project. Both parties made an active effort during the preparation process. The current project is progressing well, and the last approval stage of the project will be soon completed by the requirements of the Chinese Ministry of Education. At the same time, the two universities are preparing to recruit students. Both sides also discussed the second stage of adding new majors to the Joint Graduate School project.

May 2014, Vice Rector of the University of Glasgow John Chapman met Nankai University’s Vice President Guan Naijia in the Administration Building. The staff of Graduate School, Office for International Academic Exchanges, College of Chemistry, and College of Environmental Science and Engineering also attended the meeting. Vice President Guan introduced the current status of Nankai’s chemistry professors and academic research programs. Both sides exchanged opinions about the Joint Graduate School. Upon conclusion, Chapman and heads of College of Chemistry held an informal discussion.
October 2014, University of Glasgow’s Rector Anton Moscatelli led a delegation to visit Nankai University. They were met by Chancellor Xue Jinwen, President Gong Ke, and Vice President Tong Jiadong. The staff of the Office for International Academic Exchanges accompanied the meeting.

December 2014, a video conference between Nankai University and the University of Glasgow was held to consult on the Joint Graduate School. Present were Nankai University’s Vice President and Dean of the Graduate School Tong Jiadong, as well as Glasgow’s Vice Rector Anne Anderson. Also present were the people in charge of the Graduate School, Office for International Academic Exchanges, Zhou Enlai School of Government, School of Economics, and the College of Environmental Science and Engineering.
During the meeting, Anderson expressed her congratulations of the approval of the Joint Graduate School by Chinese Ministry of Education. Both parties discussed issues like the management of the Joint Graduate School, the coming year’s enrollment program, curriculum, and the dates for the launching ceremony, as well as respective responsibilities, etc. Both sides agreed on continued video conferences every six weeks.

December 2014, the Ministry of Education approved the establishment of Nankai University-University of Glasgow Joint Graduate School. The Ministry of Education, according to the “Regulation for Sino-Foreign Educational Cooperation” and experts’ opinions, and through serious consideration, at this moment approved Nankai University-University of Glasgow Joint Graduate School.

June 2015, during the Italian Exhibition of Master Fan Zeng in Rome, Chancellor Xue Jinwen met the Vice Rector of University of Glasgow Prof. James Conroy. The staff of the School of Literature, College of Foreign Languages, College of Life Science, and Office for International Academic Exchanges also attended the meeting. 

July 2015, the ceremony to sign the Nankai-Glasgow Cooperation Agreement was held in Beijing. The Prime Minister of Scotland Nicola Sturgeon, the Rector of University of Glasgow Anton Muscatelli, the Vice Rector Anne Anderson, the President of Nankai University Gong Ke and the Vice President Tong Jiadong attended the ceremony. President Gong Ke and Rector Anton Muscatelli represented the two sides to sign the Agreement.
