Maoyu Han: A Cultural Ambassador between China and Nigeria2018.12.14
This is the 5th appearance for Nigeria student Maoyu Han on the stage after his arrival in China.
With the closing of the “Award Ceremony for Excellent Students 2018”,Maoyu Han has been awarded “Person of the Year 2018”who is the only international student among the 10 recipients.
Remarkably, Han was awarded not only for his diligence in learning, but he was also commended for his helpfulness and special talent.
It seems that the good news doesn’t go beyond his teachers’ expectations. “Han is so talented in language learning that he passes HSK 6 after only a year’s study. His oral Chinese even shocked lots of his classmates from South China,” said some of his teachers. “Maoyu is not only adept at learning, but he is also very versatile and helpful. We believe that an excellent student is not merely a straight-A student, but he should also be a moral model,” said his supervisor Xiangqing Ren.
Born in 1997, Han graduated from the major of religion and anthropology at Nnamdi Azikiwe University, and received Confucius Institute Scholarship of the Confucius Institute at the same university. In 2017, he received the 2nd prize of the 16th Chinese Bridge Chinese Proficiency Competition for College Students in Nigeria. During the 2nd Chinese Language Teaching Idols in June this year, Han won the championship. On December 3rd, Han was invited to attend the 13th Confucius Institute Conference as a representative of prize winner.
“I wish to become a cultural ambassador between China and Nigeria, contributing to the exchanges, development, friendship and cooperation between the two countries,” said Han in the interview after the award ceremony.
When asked about the recipe for Chinese learning, what he replies always arouses jealousy. “I really don’t find it difficult to learn Chinese,” said Han. He recalled that he loved Chinese songs, TV series and movies very much. He was also fond of watching Chinese talk shows such as Top Funny Comedian: The Movie，A Bright World, and Informal Talks. By referring to the dictionaries and imitating the episodes, he made rapid progress in Chinese learning. Besides, reading is also Han’s interest.
In 2017, Han was admitted by College of Chinese Language and Culture, Nankai University. In addition to careful classroom learning, he seized every opportunity to improve his language proficiency by making Chinese friends, participating in various activities and doing a lot of readings.
During this summer holiday, he participated in summer social practice themed “Telling A Story of China” in Shanghai with his classmates. “As a foreigner, I don' t know much about Chinese history, but I can figure out the plights Chinese people were undergoing when I lost myself in the historical sites.” Han believed that the rapid development of the country is closely connected with its people’s courage in thinking and practicing. He also expressed his gratitude for receiving the opportunity to experience the national conditions with his classmates.
Moreover, Han was also credited for his helpfulness. On October this year, Yayan Lin, a Nigerian student in College of Chinese Language and Culture, suffered from acute myelogenous leukemia (AML). Han called upon his classmates to take turns in taking care of the patient and social donations for her.
Currently, Han is pursuing his mater’s degree in Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages. He has decided to pursuit another master’s in Economics or International relations at Nankai University. Han will remain true to his mission by grasping Chinese and professional knowledge so that he can dedicate himself to the friendship and cooperation between China and Nigeria.
