From December 12th -13th, the delegation led by President of Nanaki University Cao Xuetao visited University of Birmingham in the UK. Former president Nankai University and CAS member Rao Zihe, Vice Chancellor Wang Lei, Dean of College of Chemistry, CAS member Chen Jun, Prof. Tong Jiadong, and heads of College of Economics, Zhou Enlai School of Government, College of Statistics and Data Science, College of Environmental Science and Engineering, Department of Science and Technology, and Office for International Academic Exchanges accompanied the visit.
University of Birmingham Vice-Chancellor Professor David Eastwood extended warm welcome to the delegation of president Cao Xuetao. He said that University of Birmingham-Nankai University joint research institute aims to solve the major issues of human concern such as global environment, energy and ecology. He hoped that the two sides would maintain close collaboration, share research findings and promote social development. Cao Xuetao expressed gratitude to the warm reception of University of Birmingham. He said that Nankai University attaches great importance to the cooperation with University of Birmingham. The establishment of the joint research institute is a strategic cooperation that integrates the high-quality research resources of the two universities and promotes interdisciplinary research. Cao expected that both sides would take the joint research institute as a platform to promote high-level scientific exchanges and cooperation and talent cultivation.
During the visit, Cao Xuetao and University of Birmingham China Institute Director Professor Jon Frampton inaugurated for the Joint Research Institute on Green Economy and Sustainable Development.
The delegation of Cao Xuetao also visited the University’s Center for Translational Medicine, Institute of Inflammation and Ageing, Institute of Microbiology and Infection, Institute of Immunology and Immunotherapy, Institute of the Cancer and Genomic Sciences, and Institute of Translational Medicine. They also had in-depth discussion in the fields and methods of research cooperation.
During the visit to the UK, the delegation of Cao Xuetao also visited some Nankai alumni who studied in the UK on behalf of the university. He asked about their study and living conditions, encouraged them to strive for excellence and become outstanding representatives of overseas Nankai people.

The University of Birmingham is strong in fields such as Medicine and Biological Sciences. Remarkably, the employment rate of Biology major is next to that of Cambridge University. The University of Birmingham ranks 79th in QS World University Rankings 2019.
