[Gift to the 100th Anniversary of NKU] NKU Team Made Great Progress in the Study of Lithium Niobate Nanostructure 2019.04.10


Well-known for its electro-optical property, lithium niobate has become a widely-used optical material. In the age of information, every single bit of electronic data will be converted to electronic information through lithium niobate modulator and then disseminated to the world through optical fiber. Therefore, lithium nibate has been regarded as the “optical silicon” in the photoelectron age. However, how to realize the microstructure and integration of lithium niobate devices has remained a universal problem. After five years of research, the team led by Prof. Xu Jingjun and vice professor Ren Mengxin of the Key Laboratory of Weak Light Nonlinear Photonics has made great progress in the progressing of lithium niobate nanostructure. On April 8th, the paper related to the research achievement was published on prestigious international journal in optical field Laser & Photonics Reviews. Prof. Xujingjun and vice professor Ren Mengxin serve as the corresponding authors, Gao Bofeng, doctoral student of Nankai University the first author, and Dr. Wu Wei the process engineer.

The team led by Prof. Xu and vice professor Ren developed a special preparation and progressing technique for lithium niobate, and acquired a new type of artificial material called “lithium niobate metasurfaces”for the first time, which realized the selective removal of lithium niobate molecules and developed a orderly periodical arrangement of nanowire array on the surface of lithium niobate film within a thickness of a hundred nanometer. It means that a method has been found to regulate and control the lithium niobate and give it a brand-new optical property.

The achievement marks a breakthrough in fine regulating the optical behavior in nanoscale based on lithium niobate. The technique opens a door for lithium niobate in the fields of micro-nano photonics and integrated photonics.

Meanwhile, with the upcoming of the 100th Anniversary of Nankai University, the team processed a colored logo for the anniversary on lithium niobate material as a gift for the alma mater. The logo also serves as an illustration of the paper published on Laser & Photonics Reviews.
